Petite grand pianos are shorter than 4 11 sometimes called miniature baby grand pianos 4 11 to 5. The dimensions of baby grand pianos vary by manufacturer but average widths range from 4 feet 11 inches to 5 feet 6 inches. From baby grand to concert grand pianos have been built in virtually every size over the past three hundred years ranging from around 4 1 2 to 10 long. The voices of the best baby grand pianos are nearly indistinguishable from those of larger grand pianos.

Modern grand piano sizes. A baby grand piano with a wider tail can house much longer bass strings and has space for a bigger soundboard. Many listeners notice the subtle difference between smaller pianos and larger pianos. However this becomes less of the case as the size of the piano decreases.

Because smaller pianos produce poorer sound a baby grand should be at least 5 feet 7 inches wide to sound similar to a full sized grand piano. Additionally it has a better receptive area for its bridges. If you can tell the difference between a spinet and a studio or between a studio and an upright piano or between a square grand and a modern grand you still might wonder whether your grand is a baby a regular or a concern grand and you might wonder if size is all that matters when it comes to defining the different grand. Today 4 8 to 9 is the typical range.
